Chelone obliqua

Turtlehead

Chelone obliqua, or Turtlehead, is a stiffly erect, clump-forming Missouri native perennial which typically grows in moist woods, swampy areas and along streams. Hooded, snapdragon-like, two-lipped, deep rose flowers appear from late summer into autumn, resembling turtle heads. These are attractive to hummingbirds and make sweet cut flowers. Best in a moist or wet area, especially at the waterside.
